Since the foundation of the college in 1517, choral music has played an important part in the worship of Corpus Christi College Chapel. The original college statutes made provision for a choir of just five members to sing daily services. Today, the Choir is made up of over twenty students drawn from across the college. In addition, many members have come to us from other colleges, or even other universities. During the term, the choir sings Evensong on Sundays, with occasional services during the week for special occasions. We also have rehearsals, free meals and general good times. We don’t audition, but we do aim for the highest musical standards.
Under the direction of the Organ Scholars, the choir sings a range of music spanning over 500 years from the English cathedral repertoire. The choir undertakes regular tours around the UK and abroad. Recent tours have been residencies in Norwich, Oxford and Coventry Cathedrals and trips to Sussex, Cumbria, Cambridgeshire, Dublin, Rome, Canada and Japan. In 2013 The choir went on tour to Bordeaux, singing High Mass in the Cathedral as well as performing concerts in other venues across the city.
Four choral bursaries are given out each year. We do audition for these, in Michaelmas Term, and £100 is awarded to a good, reliable singer from each voice part.
Corpus Choir welcomes undergraduates and graduates of any college, religion, or level of confidence. We’re a friendly choir in a friendly college. If you are interested in joining email the Organ Scholars. You can also listen to the choir on their YouTube Channel.
