As you may be aware, we will be holding by elections for the following JCR posts at the beginning of term. All junior members of college (i.e. all members of the JCR and MCR) are eligible to stand and vote in these elections.

Entz President

Arts Officer

Equal Opportunities Officer

All positions are on the JCR Committee and thus whoever is elected needs to attend all JCR committee and JCR meetings, which happen every other Sunday (2nd, 4th, 6th & 8th weeks) and is bound by the standing orders (i.e. what you have to do – see attached) for their position. The elected member will serve out the remaining time on the current term, thus will only hold the post until the end of Michaelmas Term for the positions of Entz President and Equal Opps President, whilst the newly elected Arts Officer will be in their post until the end of Trinity Term 2013. Nobody may hold more than one JCR committee post simultaneously and for all positions except JCR President, JCR Treasurer and JCR VP, candidates can seek re-election without limit.

How to Stand

If you wish to stand for election, you need to be proposed and seconded by two different full members of the JCR. Sign up sheets will be posted in the JCR on Sunday of 1st week and will be taken down on Saturday of 1st Week. In the past, there have been joke candidates put forward, please can you not do this, it is a waste of my time (If you wish to make a cheap joke than please use a post it or something similar) and more importantly I won’t be around much to replace the sheets should they be filled up in such a manner.

How the Elections Work

If more than two candidates are nominated then we will have an election on Monday of 2nd week. Hustings will take place directly after the JCR meeting on Sunday of 2nd Week, I shall send out details of how hustings will work nearer the time. As well as the nominees, there will be an option of “None of the Above” or NOTA, which is counted as one of the candidates. It is unlikely that NOTA will win, so I will only discuss what happens in that situation only if that situation arises.

If, and ONLY if, the position is uncontested (i.e. there is only one nomination), then we shall bring a motion at the JCR meeting on Sunday of 2nd to proclaim the nominee into office. The motion will be voted on via secret ballot and if a two thirds majority is achieved in the passing of the motion, then the nominee is immediately appointed. If a two thirds majority is not achieved, then we shall elect as above, with NOTA and the nominee in question being the candidates.

An election is carried out using STV and takes place online. On the night of Sunday of 2nd Week, you will receive a voter code and instructions, unless all elections are uncontested and they are all proclaimed into office as outlined above. You follow these instructions and vote online between 8am and 8pm. At 8pm polls close, the computer does the leg work for me and I’ll announce the result via email and post a copy of the results in the JCR (as well as reading them out in the JCR should anybody be interested)…

Promotional Material

You may produce posters etc for the election, but you must not name or reference any of the other candidates. All JCR members are forbidden from covering or removing such material. You may find your posters are removed by Scouts and college staff should they deem it to be in an inappropriate place (e.g. if they are covering important signage, are attached to the recently re-varnished quad doors etc).

If you have any questions or problems, then emailing me is by far the easiest way to contact the RO, Gareth Langley.

The Corpus Christi College JCR was founded in 1797 by George Leigh Cooke, a fellow of the college. It is customary for the Poet Laureate to produce an ode to the JCR to celebrate this event. The following was my poem in honour of the JCR’s birthday on November 20th 2011:

Ode to the JCR

o conclave, potes longos perstare per annos:

cures discipulos tempus in omne tuos!

Hallowed space, inviting chamber,

Haven for the lonely student soul!

Room that in our college drama

Plays for us an ever-starring role!

In the age of Pitt the Younger,

     Ère the first Napoleonic War,

George Leigh Cooke, intrepid scholar,

Founded then the room we now adore.

Panelled walls and softest carpet,

     Squashy couches line this sanctuary.

Tucked away, its own computer

     Mercifully restored and virus-free.

Scene of late-night conversations,

     Drunken talk of fears and hopeless dreams;

Scene of teatime’s piping mugfuls

Dunked with ginger nuts and custard creams.

Here at tense, fortnightly meetings,

Tempers fray as each his view affirms:

FIFA debts we argue fiercely,

All, of course, in gender-neutral terms…

Setting of the looming hustings:

     Candidates declaim their fevered chants

Late at night there’s brazen murder:

     Dark intrigue and mutilated plants.

Scene as well of scandal, plastered

In the pages of the gutter press.

Now our JCR is forced to

Bear the stains of port-induced excess.

Corpuscles must rally round -

Restore, I pray, the room’s unstained repute

And through the intervening ages

George Leigh Cooke with one true voice salute!
