Music Soc runs events for all musicians and music lovers from Corpus and other colleges alike. We have regular lunchtime concerts in the auditorium and open mike nights in the beer cellar that welcome all abilities and always attract friendly and cheerful audiences. We also hold masterclasses with world-renowned musicians for those who play at a semi-professional level and those Corpuscles who are curious to be a fly on the wall in a professional music lesson. See below for more info!
Open Mike Nights
Open mike nights are held in the beer cellar and are aimed at anyone who wants to get up and play, especially those who will only do it after a few beers! There are plenty of musicians in Corpus who want to play, so if you need a pianist or a drummer, don’t hesitate to ask! If you need help finding people to play with, email Chloe Martindale (chloe NULL.martindale null@null ccc NULL.ox NULL.ac NULL.uk)and I will put you in touch with other musicians. We have had all sorts of things in the past at open mike nights: folk, pop, rock, blues, jazz and even a bit of comedy, so come along, show us what you’ve got. You don’t need to tell anyone in advance, just show up and play.
Lunchtime concerts are held several times a term in the Al Jaber auditorium, the pride of Corpus’ music and drama scene. Again, we welcome all abilities and genres of music – the more variety the better! If you want to play in a lunchtime concert, please e-mail Chloe Martindale (chloe NULL.martindale null@null ccc NULL.ox NULL.ac NULL.uk) and she will fit you in.
Masterclasses are held in Corpus in Michaelmas and Hilary terms for musicians from all around the University and are aimed at those who are at a semi-professional level. Additionally, they are open for everyone to listen, whether out of curiosity to witness a professional lesson, the pieces taught, or to learn something themselves as the maestro is teaching! In previous years, we have had pianist Martin Sturfalt, Susie Mezsaros of the Chilingirian Quartet and cellist Peter Adams holding masterclasses for piano, chamber groups and cello respectively. If you are interested in playing in a masterclass this year, please e-mail Chloe Martindale (chloe NULL.martindale null@null ccc NULL.ox NULL.ac NULL.uk).
