Why it exists
The Walk Safe scheme is designed to provide students a safe alternative for walking home after dark.
Last year there were a number of attacks on students walking home in the dark from colleges, departments, and libraries. It is unfair to allow this kind of harassment to affect our personal safety and studies.
How it works
Pairs of volunteers (male/female) remain in the Teddy Hall MCR from 9PM – 1AM, Tuesday – Friday.
Students requiring an escort home should ring the volunteers with a name, present location, and final destination.
The volunteers will then set out as a pair, male and female, to pick up the student and escort them home.
Very Simple. Very Easy. Possibly fun.
What’s available
- St Edmund Hall will allocate two bicycles to the scheme.
- The volunteers will also be provided with a mobile phone.
- The St Edmund Hall MCR (warm, cosy, enjoyable).
- Coffee, tea, milk, biscuits…

What’s expected
Volunteers will need to pick up and drop off the mobile phone and sundries with the night porter. Volunteers will need to log all calls and escorts in the notebook provided.
That’s all. All we need is for people to volunteer once a term. Eight people a week, 64 in total. 32 Female, 32 Male. Just once a term is a big help.
